Workforce of the future: attract and retain talents in our industry

The Talent Session at the EPCA 57th Annual Meeting discussed the challenges faced by the petrochemical industry in recruiting and retaining talent. While every industry is affected by a shortage of skilled workers, the petrochemical sector faces an additional hurdle. The increasing awareness of the industry's impact on climate change has led young people to question its long-term viability.
It is crucial to find ways to attract and convince young individuals to consider a career in the petrochemical sector. This requires crafting a compelling narrative that showcases the industry's potential and highlights its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

Several questions still need to be further explored:
❔ How can we encourage young people to pursue careers in the petrochemical industry? ❔ What narrative should we share? What image should we create? ❔ How can we incorporate ESG principles into our business operations to attract and retain highly skilled professionals? ...

To tackle these important questions and more, the EPCA's Talents of Today, Leaders of Tomorrow (TTLT) Committee (TTLT) Committee strives to support companies in our sector by addressing talent shortages and improving ESG reporting practices. In a recent meeting, the TTLT Committee made a strategic decision to prioritize ESG as a focal point going forward with a specific focus on talent attraction and leadership development. This highlights the interconnectedness of these crucial areas.

At the core of this initiative is an exploration of the skills and attributes that employees need to cultivate in order to become future leaders. The TTLT Committee recognizes the symbiotic relationship between talent acquisition, leadership development, and the broader ESG agenda, emphasizing the importance of taking a holistic approach.

As part of this process, subcommittees are re-energizing the fundamental principle of the TTLT Committee: creating future leaders from today's talent pool. This ethos aims to bridge the gap between the current workforce and the envisioned leadership landscape by emphasizing continuous learning, adaptability, and skills development.

By fostering an environment that nurtures these qualities, the TTLT Committee aims to help EPCA member companies develop visionary leaders within their organizations who can effectively navigate tomorrow's challenges while remaining aligned with their organization’s ESG commitments.

At the same time it is with deep regret that we say goodbye to Pilar Rojas, Corporate Culture Manager at Repsol, who left the TTLT after a very fruitful time. We thank her for the constant input and managing the TTLT as Vice Chair and wish her continued success in the future.
